Session Title: Reinventing the Digital Publishing Toolset

A big challenge in digital publishing today is not just the design and development of meaningful, engaging stories for any device. It’s giving creators, in home and at the office, the tools they need to compose and publish those projects just the way they need it. How do you make those tools intuitive, powerful, flexible, affordable, collaborative, and dare we say, enjoyable? Join the Atavist product team, as they tell the story of how over the last year, they reinvented a content management system developed originally for their very own award-winning magazine into a software that really anyone can use to create stunning stories and projects their way. To be covered: hard product choices, awkward pivots, sticky design challenges, unknown development territory – and how all of it came together.

  • Company Description City Harvest is the product of common sense. In the early 1980s, a group of ordinary citizens became troubled by the large number of fellow New Yorkers who didn't have enough to eat. When they saw that local restaurants were discarding perfectly good food, these volunteers responded by enlisting friends and borrowing cars to transport the leftover food to where it was needed most. This idea led to the creation of City Harvest in 1982. City Harvest has distributed more than 465 million pounds of food to a network of more than 500 community food programs throughout New York City. The organization now delivers some 144,000 pounds of food daily and 50 million pounds this year. City Harvest's common-sense, cost-effective approach remains unchanged, because by working efficiently we can help the greatest number of people possible. Picking up and delivering food the same day keeps costs down and allows us to focus on fresh, perishable foods that are often in short supply at soup kitchens and food pantries. Currently, our cost to deliver a pound of food is just 25 cents, making City Harvest a smart, simple solution to ending hunger in New York City. Most startups treat growth as a user or customer acquisition function guided by financial models and conversion tactics. While customer acquisition is a critical priority for any company, this session will propose and explore a broader definition of growth, one that balances “art” (company culture, brand identity, values and positioning) with “science” (engineering, acquisition marketing, advertising, scalable operations). Yes, I’m talking about your mom. But take no offense and hear me out. Email today really isn’t quite the AOL she probably grew to know and love back in the day. In this presentation, we'll be talking about how the inbox is a much more targeted, customized experience than ever before and how marketers can position themselves to be one step ahead of the curve. Session Title: How to Fit Solutions within Problem Context: You are Not “Uber for X”

Emerging startups constantly pitch themselves as “Uber for X,” but not every on-demand service amounts to Uber. Real-time tracking lends itself to the ride service, but not to every single possible mobile product. I don’t need real-time tracking for my hairstylist or coffee delivery. Real-time tracking is valuable because I need to know when to step outside, call the elevator, cut up a block when traffic is bad, and so forth. When building a product that orchestrates a physical service, don’t cop out with the Uber comparison. Instead, closely examine the problem you’re trying to solve with your product and design your solution within the context of that problem specifically. Focus on the problem you’re solving, not on how others are solving materially dissimilar problems with some incidental overlap.

The R&D Lab is investigating how meaning can be gathered by moving from today's frame of ʺrecordingʺ – that is, counting what is easily counted, and using opaque machine learning algorithms to hopefully find knowledge embedded in the data – to one of ʺlistening,ʺ where machines and people collaborate to discover knowledge in data sources that are harder to quantify. Among our many exhibits is a Listening Table, which keeps track of the topics discussed around it and allows participants to mark key moments as important, augmenting our conversations with structured information. It’s 2015, you’ve got a lot of choices. If you’re not having a love affair with your mobile app, you’re moving on to greener pastures. You don’t have time for your one-star app to be loading around the house in ratty sweatpants, and then freezing and force-quitting before you’re even ready to get going. You have needs. At Hinge, we have a love affair with our customers. We go out of our way to anticipate their needs, and give them more than they expect. We are givers, not takers. We also shower before meeting friends and family. The bottom line: we take these relationships very seriously. Come join Sam Levy (VP of Product) as he explains Hinge’s growth strategy, which starts with building the loyalty of the core memberbase. The conversation will discuss both product and marketing strategies that help Hinge stand out in a crowded industry. Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A with members of the marketing, product, and engineering teams and hopefully some juicing first date stories.

Connected devices – wearables, smart cars and intelligent items in our homes – enable advertisers to reach consumers 24/7. But in an always-on world, what will shape this relationship? Kiip reveals how to measure human emotion, so you can make educated efforts to reach consumers when they're most receptive. This future-proof blueprint can be replicated across any new device – even those that haven’t hit the market yet. Session Title: A Tour of New York Times' R&D Lab

This session is officially "off the record". Tweeting or photos of the R&D Lab demos are not allowed during the tour as they contain innovations with pending patents.

We live in a world exploding with massive, unstructured datasets streaming from millions of devices. The success of your business depends on your ability to extract insights from these signals to make better decisions when it matters most. In this session, data scientist and CEO Mike Driscoll will talk about the evolution of big data applications in plain language and how the revolution isn’t just a technical one but it’s about empowering any business user, from summer intern to CEO, to get to the truth.

Session Title:
How to maintain talent engagement and commitment beyond the startup honeymoon stage

AlphaSights has gone from a true startup to a team of 250+ people worldwide in seven years. Keeping our people excited and completely engaged is critical to what we do - serving some of the most sophisticated and demanding clients on a daily basis is a challenging and taxing job. Every employee, at every level, has to deliver on a daily basis. Attracting, motivating and retaining the right talent is a fundamental component of our success. How do you build a firm that is attractive to high-caliber talent - even as you scale? Indeed, what type of culture can scale? The senior management team at AlphaSights will talk openly about the challenges we've faced, what we’ve learned from them and how we’re trying to build a “growth-proof” culture and talent proposition that members of our team are excited to share with new employees.

Special Message to Attendees from Host Company: We're looking forward to meeting you and having an engaging conversation at AlphaSights on 5/14 at 4pm. Just a reminder, please bring a photo ID with you. You will need to show it to building security for them to let you up to the 4th floor where we're located.

See you soon!

Session Title: From Stored to Shared: The Next Big Data Opportunity

The Big Data movement highlights the power in numbers — not just in our data, but each of us. The sharing economy has challenged and advanced everything from how we get from A to B to how we vacation, while open-source software has enabled countless more developers to get involved, iterate faster and deliver solutions — both entertaining and life saving — more quickly. As we’ll explore in this presentation and discussion, the emergence of new and ever-more data, and increasingly brilliant methods of making sense of it, are encouraging new thinking about what becomes possible when data goes from being stored to shared.

Session Title: The Healing Powers of Creativity

At this session, you will see examples of work that will inspire you to go forth and do good with your own Creativity. Doctors offer free care in low-income areas. Lawyers work pro-bono for a client who cannot afford their fees. But what about an advertising agency? At Grey we believe that creativity can solve the world's biggest problems. And we put our brains and resources into proving it. Through our 'Healing Power of Creativity' program, Grey has battled America's gun control problem, danced with people in Zambia and showed inner-city kids in East Harlem that creativity can fuel the soul while paying the bills.
